Recent Success at the
Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium

SMG is monitoring temperature and humidity in a cold corrosive
environment. Wireless sensors were used because:
- the exhibit could not be closed for cabling
- the animals could not coexist with cables running through the
exhibit
- the sensor locations could change week to week.
The temperature is measured in 6 places including a sensor on
the roof for external temperature. We sample temperatures every 10
minutes and send the data via email to the zookeepers.
Warning
messages are also generated and sent to the keeper's cell phones if
specific user-defined conditions occur (i.e. exhibit internal
temperature goes above 62 degrees F ).
